About this event

The Baby Mac's BBQ Smoker Challenge is a barbecue competition benefiting A Wish Come True Inc. It will be held on October 4, 2025, at the Woods Tavern, West Greenwich, RI. The event features the NEBS Classic 3 Categories: Chicken Thighs, Pulled Pork, and Ribs, with an Ancillary Appetizer category.

Key Details:

  • Entry Fee: $50 ($10 goes to charity, the rest to the prize pool).

  • Categories:

    • Chicken Thighs (bone-in, standard garnish).

    • Ribs (pork ribs only, no beef or country-style).

    • Pulled Pork (Boston butt, picnic, or whole shoulder, MUST be pulled).

    • Appetizer: Small dish cooked onsite, with specific ingredients announced two weeks prior.

Contest Rules:

  • Meat Inspection: Raw meat, no pre-seasoning until after inspection.

  • Fuel: Only charcoal or wood smokers/grills allowed, no electric or propane.

  • Cooking Equipment: Teams must bring their own cooking equipment, and no sharing between teams.

  • Food Safety: Teams must provide a washing station, fire extinguisher, meat thermometer, and follow food safety practices.

  • Cooking Site: Teams will be assigned a space of 2 parking spots (20' x 20') and should leave the area clean.

Presentation & Judging:

  • Presentation: Entries must be presented in a provided 9" x 9" Styrofoam container with 6 identifiable portions.

  • Judging Criteria: Appearance, Taste, and Texture. Judging is blind and by 6 judges.

  • Awards: First, second, and third-place prizes for each category, plus Reserve Grand Champion and Grand Champion awards.

  • NEBS Team of the Year: Scores contribute towards NEBS Team of the Year points if the chief cook is a paid NEBS member.

Contest Timeline (Oct 4, 2025):

  • 1:30 pm: Judges' meeting

  • 2:30 pm: Appetizer turn-in

  • 3:00 pm: Chicken turn-in

  • 3:30 pm: Ribs turn-in

  • 4:00 pm: Pulled Pork turn-in

  • 5:30 pm: Awards

Teams can set up after 7:00 PM the night before. Overnight camping is allowed (no hookups, no security). For any inquiries, contact Robert McAllister at mac91099@gmail.com.

Local Information: For those traveling from out of town, nearby accommodations, grocery stores, and medical facilities are available. The event is easily accessible, and local businesses provide all necessary resources for a smooth competition weekend.

Waiver: A signed liability waiver must be submitted with your registration. By participating in the competition, you acknowledge the inherent risks involved and agree to release event organizers and affiliates from any liability.
