This NEBS Backyard Contest offers a platform for barbecue enthusiasts to showcase their skills and creativity in two main categories: Chicken Wings and Pork Ribs. The rules stipulate that Chicken Wings must be made from the wing of a chicken served whole or in sections as the cook sees fit, while Pork Ribs can be of any style, including Loin Back Ribs, Baby Back Ribs, Spareribs, and more, but must be from pork specifically.

For those with budding young chefs in the family, there's also a KIDS-Q category where children can let their culinary imagination run wild with the "Chef’s Choice" theme, allowing them to enter any dish they wish with an open garnish.

The event kicks off with teams arriving and setting up on Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 2:00 P.M. onwards, with meat inspection continuing as teams arrive. A live concert from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. offers a lively atmosphere and an opportunity for teams to relax before the big day. Additionally, a BBQ buffet dinner by the Bastey Boys is available for teams at $20 per person.

Quiet hours start at midnight on Saturday and continue until 7:00 A.M. on Sunday, September 8, when teams can begin setting up again. Free coffee and homemade Finnish coffee bread will be provided by The Otter River Sportsman’s Club from 7:00 A.M. to 9:00 A.M., ensuring everyone starts the day off right.

The action really heats up on Sunday with the Kids Q and Backyard Cooks Meeting at 9:00 A.M., where rules are clarified, turn-in boxes are distributed, and any questions are answered. Judges meetings follow for both the Kids Q and Backyard categories, ensuring fairness and consistency in the judging process.

The competition officially begins with the Kids Q turn-in at 10:55 A.M., followed by Chicken Wings at 12:55 P.M., and Pork Ribs at 1:25 P.M. The day culminates in the eagerly anticipated awards ceremony at approximately 3:30 P.M., where winners will be celebrated for their barbecue mastery.

With its blend of camaraderie, competition, and mouthwatering barbecue, the 2024 Otter River BBQ Cook-off promises to be an unforgettable event for participants and spectators alike. For more information, visit www.otterriversportsmansclub.org and www.nebs.org.
